Safe Environment

Called to Protect

We are committed to providing an environment where abuse is not tolerated. Together, we can protect our children, not only here at church but in society at large.

As a parish within the Diocese of Phoenix, we regularly present a program for all new employees and volunteers titled Called to Protect™ for Ministries. In this program you will learn myths and facts about sexual abuse and sexual offenders, detailed warning signs to watch for in adults who may abuse, and how to identify children who may have been abused. You will also learn specific steps to take in screening and guidelines for interaction, monitoring, training and responding.

This training educates and empowers adults about how to help prevent abuse. In this 3‐ hour session, you will learn the following:

  • How to separate the facts about child sexual abuse from the myths
  • How sexual offenders gain access to children
  • What to do when you see warning signs in children, or adults

This training is mandatory for all employees and those who volunteer in any ministry in the parish. You may register for this workshop online at safeenvironmenttraining.org/classes.php.

At the workshop, you will be asked to sign a Code of Ethics based on the diocese's Policy and Procedures for the Protection of Minors. Please take a moment to review the policy by visiting the safe environment page for the Diocese of Phoenix.

You will also be asked to complete a diocesan volunteer application. Please plan to bring a list of your previous volunteer experience, with the name and contact information for your volunteer supervisors, as well as contact information (name, address, and phone number) for at least three references (one professional, one personal, and one family member).

Renewal Training

All volunteers who work directly with young people are required to renew their training annually in regards to creating a safe environment for the children in the community. All other volunteers are asked to complete this renewal training every other year. This renewal training is only for those individuals who have completed the foundational 3-hour Called to Protect for Ministries™ workshop.

This renewal option is available online, but you must have access to a computer with speakers. Simply go to the Safe Environment website and click on Online Renewal.

You will be asked to log in with your name and address; the address will be the one you used when you completed the 3‐hour Called to Protect™ session.

You may also register to attend an in‐person renewal workshop by going to safeenvironmenttraining.org/classes.php.
