The Guadalupe Scholarship: Newman 101, Fully Funded

Mary College at ASU offers Newman 101: The Great Catholic Adventure for $300 — three credits, applicable toward your Humanities, Arts & Design requirement. Through the generosity of a patron of the Newman Center, that remaining cost is now covered for incoming freshmen and new transfer students. Students who enroll, register, and apply take the course at no cost.

Most freshmen don't come to ASU thinking much about a humanities elective. It's a requirement to check off. But Newman 101 was built to be something more than that: a real look at what it means to live a Catholic life, taught alongside other students figuring out the same questions, in your first semester on campus.

It's already priced lower than almost anything comparable — $300 for a 3-credit course is unusual on its own. A patron of the Newman Center has chosen to cover that remaining cost, believing that a Catholic education should be within reach for students in their first year at ASU.

If you apply and you're approved, the remaining balance is settled on our end. You don't pay it, and you don't need to arrange anything with the Newman Center — there's no exchange of money on your side at all.

HOW IT WORKS

There are three things that have to happen, in this order:

1. Enroll in Mary College at ASU. This has to happen before anything else. It's the prerequisite for both the class and the scholarship.
2. Register for Newman 101 (Catholic 101). This is the course the scholarship applies to.
3. Apply for the Guadalupe Scholarship. A short form — a few questions, nothing lengthy.

If you registered for the class over the summer, step two is already done. You can go straight to the application.

Who qualifies:

• Incoming freshman or new transfer student
• In your first two semesters at ASU
• Enrolled full-time at ASU
• Registered for both Mary College and Newman 101

Spots are limited — this is a first-semester scholarship, and applications will be considered in the order they're received.

A FEW THINGS PARENTS TEND TO ASK

Does my student need to pay anything upfront? No. If the application is approved, the cost is covered directly.

Is proof of enrollment required? Being registered for Mary College and Newman 101 is what makes a student eligible. Details on documentation will be handled during the application process.

Who funds this? The scholarship is made possible by a patron of the Newman Center.
